May 17, 2017 — Following a rigorous search process, the presidential search committee has unanimously recommended that the university’s Rector, Professor Asher Cohen, be elected President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The recommendation will be brought for approval to the Board of Managers and the Executive Committee.
As Rector of the Hebrew University for the past five years, Professor Cohen led a number of important processes. These include recruiting top researchers from Israel and around the world and providing them with the tools to stand at the forefront of global research, refreshing the university’s curricula and developing innovative programs that combine diverse disciplines, and increasing the university’s international cooperation and student and staff exchanges with leading institutions around the world.
After graduating with a B.A. in Economics and an M.A. in Psychology from the Hebrew University, Professor Cohen did his doctoral and post-doctoral studies at the University of Oregon in the United States. He served as a senior lecturer at Indiana University before returning in the early 1990s to the Hebrew University’s Department of Psychology, in the Faculty of Social Sciences. From 2008 to 2012, he served as the head of the Department of Psychology. He also held various leadership positions at the University, including being elected by his peers to serve as head of the Association of University Professors.
Professor Cohen’s research in the cognitive sciences focuses on the relationship between the human perception system and human response mechanisms, in situations that require very fast motor responses. In the framework of his research, Professor Cohen developed a theoretical model that successfully predicts in which situations performing two tasks will lead to a decline in abilities.

These five Lancet Series papers and accompanying comments outline Israel’s achievements in health and health care, towards a goal of attaining universal health coverage for an unusually diverse population. The papers explore Israel’s unique history, challenges, and accomplishments, and the religious and regional influences that have had an impact on health. The Series also offers an insight into existing collaborations and potential future opportunities, and outlines extensive recommendations to address the persisting inequalities between population groups, and to further strengthen health-care delivery systems.

Public Health Leadership in Challenging Times: Learning from the Past and Preparing for the Future
Tuesday, May 9, 2017
Margaret Hamburg is an internationally recognized leader in public health and medicine, where she is known for advancing regulatory science and modernizing regulatory pathways. From 2009-2015 she served as the 21st Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She was also the founding vice president and senior scientist at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a foundation dedicated to reducing nuclear, chemical and biological threats. Other positions have included Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (HHS), Health Commissioner for New York City, and Assistant Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

At his confirmation hearing in April, Dr. Gottlieb told senators that he believed in upholding the F.D.A.’s reputation as the world’s “gold standard” for drug approval. If confirmed, he said then, he would be “an absolutely objective regulatory watchdog” and would not do anything that could “besmirch the agency” or undermine public confidence in its work.
One of Dr. Gottlieb’s biggest jobs will be putting in place the 21st Century Cures Act, a law signed by President Barack Obama late last year that directs the F.D.A. to speed up drug approvals. He also said he would make addressing the nation’s opioid epidemic a top priority.

The National Institutes of Health has selected 42 talented and diverse students, representing 35 U.S.-accredited universities, for the sixth class of its Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP). The MRSP received a record number of applications during the 2017-2018 application cycle. The 42 selected participants consist of 39 medical, two dental, and one veterinary student; 48 percent are female and eight individuals are from underrepresented minority groups. There are five second year, 35 third, and two fourth year students in the class; six of the 42 have had previous NIH research experience. The accepted scholars begin their MRSP fellowship in July/August of this year.
“These 42 scholars represent some of this country’s most promising future biomedical researchers and academic leaders.”
—Frederick P. Ognibene, M.D., Director, Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education, NIH Clinical Center
The MRSP is co-sponsored by the NIH and other partners via contributions to the Foundation for the NIH.
