Live Notes from @AACR’s #cbi16 Meeting on Precision Medicine: Success Story and Dr. Stephan Grupp
2:10 PM Big Idea: A Philadelphia Cancer Success Story: Stephen Grupp, MD PhD CHOP
Reporter: Stephen J. Williams, Ph.D
Dr. Grupp actually is a lymphoma survivor!
- pediatric War on Cancer drastically improved from early 1970’s however he says now we are leveling off of cancer mortality; getting kids in clinical trials helped
- Nowell and Hungerford opened up precision medicine (Phila chromosome); however leukemia is still #1 cause of pediatric mortality so we need novel therapies
- CAR-T (ChOP’s CART019 to CD19); showed great movies showing bubling of T cell lining… they are digesting the cancer cell
- Proliferation and Persistence is important for this therapy… how long is long enough.. we don’t know
- block toxicity with toclizumab
- over 200 patients with B cell cancers…. 93% complete remission… don’t need transplant.. 2-3 years out
- transplant is hard and risky so this therapy might be the replacement hopefully
- he is clear that not all patients are in remission now so there are more improvements to do
- Biden met with Carl June and Bruce Levin (figured out how to give those T cells to patients)
- part of pediatric Dream Team (SUC2)
- worldwide trial has been initiated around the world… goal FDA approval in 2016
