Today, biospecimen collections are used by multiple research groups for varying research aims, from basic
research through clinical trials. A well-managed biobank is a critical prerequisite for high-quality biological
research. The proper collection, processing, storage and tracking of biospecimens are critical components
allowing researchers to better link molecular and clinical information. Thus, by necessity, biobanking is
both a science and a business. Cambridge Healthtech Institute’s Sixth Annual Leaders in Biobanking Congress:
Maximizing Your Investment in Biospecimens addresses both the business and science of biobanking, bringing
together biomedical and biopharmaceutical researchers, regulators, biorepository managers and practitioners
to investigate the best strategies for effective use of biospecimens within today’s cutting edge research.
Topics Include:
Plenary Keynote Presentations on Defining Precision Medicine – It Takes a Village, – in which four speakers
emphasize the diverse insights, broad resources and expansive collaborations needed to meet the promise of this field:
- Dr. Carolyn Compton of National Biomarkers Development Alliance and Arizona State University
- Dr. James Olson of Seattle Children’s Hospital and Presage Biosciences
- Dr. Nathan Price of the Institute for Systems Biology
- Dr. John Slattery of University of Washington School of Medicine
Biobanking Is a Business, which highlights costs, resource optimization, self-sustainability and other issues
managers must consider to run successful biorepositories
Informed Consent: Biosamples Start with Patients, which considers how to balance scientific utility with
individual privacy, with examples on iPSC research, pediatric biobanking and unexpected results
Putting Biosamples to Use, which emphasizes connections between good biobanking practices and biomarker
development, translational research and personalized medicine Optimizing Value from Your Biospecimens, which offers insights on improving quality, biobanking informatics and global infrastructures for that purpose Biospecimen Processing and Storage Optimization, which explores temperature control, freeze-thaw effects, stabilization and other important factors that affect the quality of bio-and cryopreserved samples Case Study Presentations, which illustrate active Biobanker/Biouser Partnerships and each party’s needs, contributions, bottlenecks and scientific results
