Coalition Commends National Institutes of Health on Selection of Eric Dishman as Director of Precision Medicine Initiative Cohort Program PMC President Edward Abrahams Stresses Importance of Project’s Transition to a New Administration WASHINGTON (April 11, 2016) — The Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC) today commends the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the selection of Eric Dishman, a leader with a dynamic background as a business leader, researcher, policy advocate and patient, as the director of the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) Cohort Program. “Constructing a cohort of one million patients and the infrastructure to support its use will require interaction with stakeholders from every corner of the health care system,” said PMC President Edward Abrahams. “Very few people have the necessary personal and professional experience working with all of those stakeholders, but Eric Dishman is one of them.” In a statement published this morning, NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., said Dishman, who survived a 23-year battle with a rare form of kidney cancer, brings perspectives that are crucial to the cohort’s success. Dishman became cancer free thanks to a personalized medicine treatment plan, and said he believes he was “put on this earth” to “help bring precision medicine to everyone.” Abrahams said PMC looks forward to working with Dishman on the project’s important transition to a new administration. The PMI, Abrahams said, could have a significant impact on patient care, particularly if ongoing Congressional support of personalized medicine yields regulation and reimbursement policies that are supportive of the field. “Like Eric Dishman, we look forward to an era in which personalized medicine is the standard of care,” Abrahams said. “But that era will only be possible if our public policies and research priorities align with the field’s principles. If that happens, both patients and the health care system will benefit tremendously.” ### About the Personalized Medicine Coalition: |
